作者简介:

庄士敦,1874年生于苏格兰首府爱丁堡,原名雷金纳德·弗莱明·约翰斯顿。1898年,作为一名东方见习生被派往香港。从此,庄士敦以学者兼官员的身份在华工作生活了三十四年。1919年2月,赴京,开始了“帝师”生涯。庄士敦是中国几千年帝王史上第一位也是最后一位具有“帝师”头衔的外国人。

庄士敦是一个汉学功力深厚、具有学者素养的人,他广猎经史子集,喜欢中国古典诗词与饮茶之道。撰写了大量有关中国问题的论著,如《佛教徒在中国》、《威海卫狮龙共存》、《儒教与近代中国》等。但令其声名大振的即是1934年出版的这本《紫禁城的黄昏》。

庄士敦不仅对溥仪竭诚尽忠,也为古老的皇宫带来了新的气息,深受溥仪崇敬。但在大量中国文献中,都不约而同将他写成西方文化的代表,是文化侵略的急先锋,甚至说庄士敦教英文是假,实际上是小朝廷与英国使馆的联络人,是英国特务。而在英国人的眼中,庄士敦又是一个过于热心拥抱异国文化的怪人,甚至是一个一心效忠外国主子的“英奸”。

1938年,庄士敦去世,终身未娶。
